Iranian stone wholesale: travertine, marble, onyx and granite blocks, slabs and tiles

Iran quarries and processes a wide range of natural stone, best known for its travertine in ivory, walnut, silver, yellow and red tones, and for onyx, marble and granite. Most processing is concentrated around Isfahan, with quarries in Markazi (Mahallat area), East Azerbaijan (Azarshahr), Yazd, Isfahan and other provinces. Importers usually buy blocks, slabs or cut-to-size tiles and specify colour, finish, thickness and tolerances. On ASL Market you can compare offers from Iranian quarries and factories, see photos of the actual lot in chat and pay through escrow.

Iranian stone types and colours

Colour names vary from quarry to quarry, and the same name can mean different shades. Always approve the colour on photos or samples of the actual lot, and ask for the quarry name.

Forms, finishes and cuts

  • Forms: raw blocks, gang-saw slabs (usually 2 cm or 3 cm thick), cut-to-size tiles, steps and risers, mosaics.
  • Common tile sizes: 30 × 30, 40 × 40, 30 × 60, 60 × 60 cm and free length, usually 1.2–2 cm thick for interiors and thicker for exterior paving.
  • Finishes: polished, honed, filled and honed, unfilled, tumbled, brushed, sand-blasted, bush-hammered.
  • Travertine cut: vein cut (striped look) or cross cut (cloudy look).
  • Filling: cement or resin fill, and colour of the filler.
  • Grading: first choice, commercial, standard; agree the maximum share of holes, veins and colour variation.

Technical tests to ask for

For floors and facades, ask for a test report on the stone, not just the brand name. Testing is usually done by a laboratory to European (EN) or American (ASTM) methods.

Packaging, loading, MOQ and lead time

Tiles are usually packed in fumigated wooden crates that meet ISPM-15, with foam or cardboard between rows. Slabs travel in wooden bundles or on A-frames. Ask for crate weight and square metres per crate on the packing list.

A 20-foot container is the usual unit for stone because of its weight; the load is limited by the container's and the road's weight limits, not by volume. MOQs usually start around one container, though some suppliers mix several products. Cut-to-size orders usually take a few weeks to produce. Price depends on stone type, colour, grade, finish, thickness, size and quantity.

HS codes, documents and shipping

Onyx is usually classified with marble or alabaster, depending on the stone. Check the full code with your customs broker. Usual documents are the commercial invoice, packing list with square metres and weights, certificate of origin, and a fumigation certificate for wooden crates where required. Import rules differ by country; check your own country's rules on trade with Iran before you order.

Most stone ships in containers from Bandar Abbas (Shahid Rajaee port), often via Jebel Ali. Road and rail routes serve Iraq, Turkey, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Common terms are EXW factory, FOB Bandar Abbas and CFR. See /guides/incoterms-for-iranian-exports and /guides/shipping-routes-from-iran.

FAQ

What is the difference between vein-cut and cross-cut travertine?

Vein-cut travertine is cut along the natural layers and shows parallel stripes. Cross-cut travertine is cut across the layers and shows a cloudy, more uniform pattern. The same block can give either look.

What does filled and honed travertine mean?

The natural holes in the stone are filled with cement or resin, and the surface is ground to a smooth matt finish. It is the most common finish for floors. Agree the filler type and colour.

How much stone fits in a 20-foot container?

Stone is heavy, so a container is usually limited by weight, not space. The square metres per container depend on thickness and crate weight. Ask the supplier to calculate it for your size and thickness.

Which tests should I ask for on Iranian marble or travertine?

Ask for water absorption, density, flexural and compressive strength, and for floors, abrasion and slip resistance. Tests to EN or ASTM methods are widely accepted. ASL Market does not test stone itself.

What is the HS code for travertine tiles?

Polished or otherwise worked travertine and marble tiles are usually HS 6802.91. Blocks and simply sawn slabs fall under 2515.11 or 2515.12. Check the full code with your customs broker.

How do I make sure the colour matches my order?

Ask for photos of the laid-out tiles or slabs from your actual lot in daylight, and keep a reference sample. Natural stone varies, so agree an acceptable colour range in writing.

Do wooden crates need treatment?

Many countries require wood packaging to meet ISPM-15, with heat treatment or fumigation and a stamp on the wood. Ask the supplier to confirm this on the packing list.
