Food certificates from Iran: what halal, ISO 22000, HACCP, health, phytosanitary and lab documents prove

Food from Iran usually travels with two kinds of documents: certificates about the shipment (phytosanitary or health certificate, certificate of origin, lab analysis of the lot) and certificates about the producer (halal, ISO 22000, HACCP, FSSC 22000 and similar). Shipment certificates are issued per consignment by Iranian authorities or laboratories and are what customs checks. Producer certificates show that a factory runs a management system, but they say nothing about a single lot. Know which one proves what before you rely on it.

Shipment certificates vs producer certificates

A shipment certificate refers to a specific consignment: it names the exporter, the consignee, the product, the quantity and often the container or lot number. Your customs and food authorities usually require these for clearance.

A producer certificate refers to a company or site and is valid for a period, often three years with annual audits. Retailers and food manufacturers often ask for producer certificates as part of supplier approval, but they do not replace shipment documents or lot testing.

Phytosanitary and health certificates

Fresh fruit, nuts, dried fruit, spices, herbs, seeds and similar plant products need a phytosanitary certificate. Iran's Plant Protection Organization issues it after inspection, according to the requirements your country has notified. Ask your importer of record or broker for your country's requirements for that product, and send them to the supplier before shipment; some markets require additional declarations or fumigation.

Processed foods such as sweets, paste, packaged tea and canned goods usually need a health certificate issued under the Iranian Food and Drug Administration. The producer must hold an IFDA production licence, and that licence number normally appears on the label. Animal-origin products such as honey need a veterinary certificate, and some markets only accept them from establishments that are listed for export to that market.

Lab analysis: the document that protects you most

For most food trade, the lab report on the actual lot is the most useful document, because it measures the values that customs labs at destination will test. Ask for a report from a laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, with the lab name, accreditation number, sample ID, sampling date and methods.

Agree the parameters and limits before the lot is sampled, using your own market's limits rather than general ones. If the value matters, have a sealed sample tested by a lab you choose, in Iran or at destination.

ProductTests buyers commonly ask for
Pistachios, nuts, dried figsAflatoxin B1 and total, moisture, pesticide residues
SaffronISO 3632 coloring strength, bitterness, aroma, moisture; tests for added dyes and adulterants
Dates and dried fruitMoisture, insect damage, microbiology, sulphites where used
Herbs, spices, herbal teasPesticide residues, microbiology, pyrrolizidine alkaloids, heavy metals
HoneyMoisture, HMF, sugar profile, residues of veterinary drugs, authenticity
Sweets, paste, concentrateMicrobiology, Brix or moisture, aflatoxin for nut-based products

Halal certificates

Most Iranian food is produced according to halal practice, but customs and retailers in many Muslim-majority markets require a written halal certificate from a body they recognise. Recognition lists differ by country, so check the issuing body against your own country's list before you order, not after the goods arrive.

A halal certificate covers specific products and sites for a stated period. Check that the product name, producer and validity dates match your order.

ISO 22000, HACCP and other management certificates

ISO 22000 is the international standard for food safety management systems; FSSC 22000 builds on it and is recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), as are BRCGS and IFS. HACCP is the hazard-control method at the heart of these systems, based on Codex Alimentarius principles. Many large retailers require a GFSI-recognised certificate from their suppliers.

When a supplier shows a management certificate, check the certificate number with the issuing body, the scope (which products and site), the expiry date and whether the certification body is accredited. A certificate for one factory does not cover goods bought from other producers and repacked.

How to request documents on ASL Market

List the documents you need in the chat or in your buying request at /post-request before the supplier quotes, because some certificates take time and cost money to obtain. Ask for copies of producer certificates and a sample lab report at the start, and the final shipment documents before or with the shipment.

ASL Market does not physically inspect goods and does not issue certificates. The «Verified» badge means a store has at least two live listings with photos, or documents checked by ASL Market; it does not mean that every product is certified. Payment is in USDT today, and ASL Secure Pay holds the money until you confirm receipt. If the documents or goods do not match the order, open a dispute before you confirm receipt; ASL Market decides, and a partial refund is possible. Import rules differ by country; check your own country's rules on trade with Iran before you order. See /guides/export-documents-from-iran.

FAQ

Who issues the phytosanitary certificate in Iran?

Iran's Plant Protection Organization, part of the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad, issues phytosanitary certificates for plant products after inspection. The certificate follows the IPPC model and states compliance with the importing country's plant health requirements.

Does an ISO 22000 certificate mean the food is safe?

It means the producer runs a certified food safety management system. It does not test the lot you buy. Use a lab analysis of the actual lot for food safety values such as aflatoxin and residues.

Is Iranian food halal-certified?

Many Iranian producers hold halal certificates, but not every product or site is certified. Ask for the certificate for the specific product and check that your country recognises the issuing body.

What is the difference between a health certificate and a lab report?

A health certificate is an official statement that the product comes from a licensed producer and is fit for consumption. A lab report gives measured values for a sample. Customs may require the first, and your quality checks depend on the second.

Which lab should test my goods?

Use a laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 for the tests you need. For important values, test a sealed sample at a lab you choose, in Iran or at destination.

Who pays for certificates?

It depends on the agreement and the Incoterm. Export certificates are usually arranged by the supplier, and extra tests requested by the buyer are often charged. Agree this before the supplier quotes.

Does ASL Market certify products?

No. ASL Market does not issue certificates or physically inspect goods. Ask suppliers for documents, check them with the issuers, and pay through escrow until you confirm receipt.
